About this blog
This blog is devoted to Spore, a game in development that I stumbled upon when goolging for “evolution game” back in the spring of 2005. What I found was the video of Will Wrights’ 2005 GDC speech and it knocked me of my socks. A game about everything I’m interested in: biology, space exploration and visual art. I started following the news, which became a game in itself. During the years that followed, I built up a huge collection of videos and images.
When TakenbyRobots launched his blog-hosting idea on Spores Illustrated, I decided to participate and share some of my collection and build a more permanent record of this now almost infamous game-in-development.
The subject Spore allows me to also showcase the science news I was following anyway with like-minded and possibly like-minded to be. All in all, I enjoy making it, and welcome anyone to enjoy it with me.
I am a gamer, I was one even before you could play ‘electronic’ games. I got more involved with the gaming community on the internet, when I decided to join Civfanatics to discuss Alpha Centauri in 2001. It was the first Internet forum I joined and thought long before choosing a forum name.
I finally decided on “a space oddity” for a number of reasons. a) It was 2001 and a big fan of Arthur C Clarke’s book, but I had trouble spelling Odyssey… b) I was neither young nor male, and not ready to disclose that fact at that stage, and finally c) I have been interested in astronomy equally long as being a gamer; forever. For practical reasons I now use Space Oddity, dropping the a.
I live in the Netherlands, have a husband and two kids, a son and a daughter. I have a degree in Mathematics, currently work in Speech Recognition applications and generally am interested in the way people interact with computers.
The avatar is a drawing of a figure from Dutch literature “meester Prikkebeen”, I thought it fitting because I expect to spend my time in Spore as collector of all the interesting stuff people make. I have high expectations of you, Spore players!
